Two substitution examples showing dairy milk to oat milk at one-to-one and vanilla syrup to maple syrup at three-quarters
Milk swaps begin at equal volume; stronger syrups usually need a smaller first pour.

What one-to-one really means

Replacing 60 ml dairy milk with 60 ml barista oat milk in the ingredient substitution calculator keeps the batch the same size. Protein, fat, sweetness and stabilizers will still differ.

When evaluating a substitute, keep cup size, syrup and tool constant. That makes the ingredient change easier to judge.

Replacing dairy

Barista oat or soy milk is presented as a direct volume starting point because the carton is formulated for beverage texture. Standard plant drinks may still work; compare your milk and available equipment in the Milk & Foam Matcher before choosing a starting method.

If the substitute is already sweetened, reduce flavored syrup before changing the milk quantity.

Replacing cream

Full-fat coconut milk can replace cream by volume when richness is the goal, but it changes flavor and may behave differently when chilled. More milk is the simpler substitute when you want a lighter, more pourable result.

A replacement should be judged against your goal. Matching richness, matching flavor and matching foam structure may require different ingredients.

Replacing flavored syrup

Simple syrup preserves sweetness without copying aroma. Maple syrup has a different intensity, so the tool begins below a full one-to-one amount. After choosing a replacement, carry the adjusted quantity into the recipe calculator instead of treating every syrup as equally strong.

Taste the base before frothing when the ingredients are safe to consume as mixed. Small flavor corrections are easier before air is added.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Does a 1:1 substitute produce the same foam?

No. It preserves volume only; composition, flavor and texture can still change.

Can I replace dairy milk with oat milk?

Yes as a starting point, preferably with a barista formulation, but expect brand variation.

Can vanilla extract replace vanilla syrup directly?

Not directly. Extract supplies concentrated aroma but little sweetness, so use a small amount with simple syrup.
