ONE SERVING
Ingredients
- 60–120 ml cold skim, 2% or barista oat milk
- 1–2 teaspoons syrup, optional
- A French press, lidded jar or blender
THE METHOD
Step-by-step
- 01
Chill the milk and your chosen container.
- 02
Add milk and syrup, leaving at least half the container empty.
- 03
French press: pump 20–30 times. Jar: shake 30–45 seconds. Blender: pulse on low for 15–20 seconds.
- 04
Rest for 10 seconds, swirl, then pour over an iced drink.
01
Best result: the French press method
Pour cold milk into a clean French press, keeping it below one-third full. Raise and lower the plunger rapidly without forcing it against the bottom. The fine mesh introduces air and repeatedly divides larger bubbles.
After 20–30 pumps, remove the lid, tap the press once on the counter and swirl. The texture is usually close to handheld-frother foam and works especially well with low-fat milk.
02
Easiest result: the jar method
Use a clean jar with a leakproof lid and plenty of empty space. Shake vigorously until the volume expands. The bubbles will be larger than with a frother, but the method is fast and requires no special equipment.
Let the jar stand for ten seconds so the largest bubbles rise, then swirl instead of shaking again. Pour the smoother foam from underneath the dry top layer.
03
For several drinks: use a blender
A countertop blender is useful when making two to four servings. Use the lowest setting or short pulses; high speed can create coarse bubbles and warm the milk. Stop as soon as the foam becomes uniform.
An immersion blender also works in a tall narrow beaker. Keep the blade submerged to avoid splashes and lift it slightly only at the start to introduce air.
04
How to make it without heavy cream
Heavy cream is not required for cold foam. In fact, skim and low-fat milk often create more volume because their proteins stabilize air efficiently. For a richer result without cream, use whole milk or mix whole milk with a small amount of barista oat milk.
QUICK ANSWERS
Frequently asked questions
What can I use if I do not have a milk frother?
A French press is the strongest substitute. A sealed jar, blender or immersion blender also works.
Can I make cold foam without heavy cream?
Yes. Standard cold foam is commonly made from milk alone; low-fat milk often gives the most volume.
Can I whisk cold foam by hand?
Yes, but it takes longer. Use a small balloon whisk in a narrow bowl and whisk rapidly for one to two minutes.
